As with many developing countries, Malawi has a number of health issues. Many of these are related to poverty and lack of education. HIV/AIDS has had a major impact on the country and whilst the number of new cases is starting to drop, many families and children have been seriously affected by it, with parents dying and children carrying the virus. An estimated 11% of the adult population have HIV/AIDS (0.2% in UK).
Other major illnesses are diarrhoea, hepatitis, typhoid, malaria, dengue fever, schistosomiasis and rabies. Improved access to clean water, better sanitation and irrigation will help to reduce these.
